Knox City Council has numerous planning controls on land that protect trees and vegetation, especially around the Dandenong Ranges. There are potential consequences for breaching planning laws. It’s possible to find out what planning controls apply to your land by doing a property and parcel search on the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning website.

Trees and vegetation on land which has been previously developed, such as dual occupancy or multi-unit development, are protected by the plans that were approved at the time of the original development. Typically, a development would have had an approved landscape plan. If this is the case, Knox City Council may require a written approval for tree work. Knox City Council recommends contacting their Planning Services team before you initiate any tree works.

Many Victorian City Councils maintain a register of trees that are considered ‘significant’ for a number of reasons (such as cultural, historic or aesthetic reasons), and in some cases these may be listed as part of a wider environmental or vegetation overlay for the Council concerned – and as such may have specific requirements or caveats around undertaking any work on such a tree.

It is critical that this issue is investigated and considered before any work is planned or permit applications commenced.

Knox City Council does not publish a specific list of significant or heritage listed trees, however, has produced a draft ‘GARS’ (Green Areas and Rural Strategy) which sets out the values and proposed land usage within certain areas over the next 20 years.

Given this relative lack of specificity in relation to individual trees within Knox City Council, it is even more imperative that the appropriate permits are obtained before tree removal or pruning is undertaken.
